Pathology

  • A combination of junctional activity at the dermo-epidermal junction together with the presence in the dermis of the heavily pigmented bipolar dendritic cells found in a blue naevus

Key diagnostic features

  • Frequently quite large and may have an irregular border
  • Often show features consistent with their dual origin with a brown component and blue-black component

Management

  • Although benign, these lesions are usually excised with a 2 mm margin of normal skin  to confirm the diagnosis and exclude melanoma
