Negative network (negative pigment network)
Dermoscopic Description
A negative network (formerly known as inverse network) consists of serpiginous lighter grid lines that connect between hyperpigmented, elongated-to-curvilinear globules.
What the structures correspond to histologically
The pale part of the negative network is thought to be due to thin elongated rete ridges accompanied by large melanocytic nests within a widened papillary dermis or to bridging of rete ridges.
Lesions in which the structures arise
Asymmetrical areas of negative network suggest melanoma or atypical spitz naevus. Symmetrical negative network may be seen in Spitz naevi, dermatofibromas, and some congenital naevi.
