Shiny white structures

Dermoscopic Description
Shiny white structures (SWS) (formerly known as crystalline structures or chrysalis) are only seen with polarised dermoscopy and may require the operator to rotate the dermatoscope over the lesion to see them (angular dependence). SWS include shiny white lines, shiny white blotches and strands, and rosettes. Lines can run parallel or orthogonally (in a way that forms a right angle or is perpendicular to another line or direction). 

What the structures correspond to histologically
SWS correlate histologically with altered collagen in the dermis (fibrosis).

Lesions in which the structures arise
Shiny white lines are found in scars, dermatofibromas, basal cell carcinomas, and also in melanomas and Spitz naevi. Blotches and strands are most commonly seen in BCCs and are not predictive of the depth of invasion. Rosettes (also known as ‘four-clod dots’) are defined as four white points, arranged as a four leaf clover. Rosettes are not lesion-specific and while are most commonly found in actinic keratoses, they are described in many other tumours and inflammatory lesions including scars, dermatofibroma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma.
