Health professionals undertaking skin surgery need to be safe, confident and up-to-date with techniques and guidelines. The PCDS provides two surgical courses for GPs and GPwSI each year. Both courses, designed for all standards, are designed to be very hands-on with a large proportion of the course time spent in small group practical sessions backed up by factual lectures and operating video clips. The tutors include consultant plastic surgeons, associate specialists and experienced GPwSI. The number of delegates for these courses is restricted to allow an approximate ratio of one tutor to four delegates to ensure a high-quality learning experience. The use of minor surgery instruments and pig skin gives a realistic feel to the surgery.
